Event: Jared Diamond - What We
Can Learn From Traditional Societies

Join us this coming Monday for an evening with Jared Diamond,
Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns,
Germs and Steel.
Jared will speak about his new book, The World Until Yesterday,
which provides a mesmerising picture of the human past as it was for
millions of years. Diamond considers what the differences between that
past and the present mean for our lives today.
Diamond draws from his decades of field work in the
Pacific islands, as well as evidence from Inuit, Amazonian Indians,
Kalahari San people and others. He finds that their solutions to
universal human problems such as child rearing, elder care, dispute
resolution, risk and physical fitness have much to teach us.
Jared will then be joined on stage by Natasha Mitchell,
presenter of ABC Radio National's Life Matters program, for a discussion
about his work.

encyclopedic knowledge of fields such as anthropology, sociology,
linguistics, physiology, nutrition and evolutionary biology. Diamond is a

On January 25 we presented "An Evening with Neil
Gaiman" at City Recital Hall. It was an unforgetttable night of
stories, music, singing and magic.
As a very special part of the event, Neil read from his
forthcoming novel The
Ocean At The End Of The Lane and answered questions from the

Welcome New Board Member Lena
Nahlous
|
|
We are delighted to welcome Lena Nahlous to the Sydney
Writers' Festival board.
Lena has more than 16 years experience in arts, cultural
and media organisations, most recently as the Executive Director of
Western Sydney based company Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE).
Lena Nahlous has managed screen and digital media-based
initiatives that have engaged thousands of people, particularly women,
refugees, migrants and young people. She established Artfiles, an
employment and engagement program for Western Sydney artists, the Switch
Digital Arts Access Centre and was a co-founder of the Sydney Arab Film
Festival. In 2006 she was a recipient of an Asialink Arts Fellowship to
Hong Kong and in 2008 completed the Asialink Leadership program. She sat
on the NSW Government Arts Advisory Committee, participated in the
Australia 2020 Summit and has been named by Creative Sydney one of
Sydney's 100 creative catalysts.

three Fellowships of $7,000 each to emerging and established writers aged
16 years and over from the Greater Western Sydney region.
To be considered you must be able to demonstrate a strong
and recent connection to the Greater Western Sydney region.

SWF Appoints Publicist Team for
2013
|
|
Well known publicist and literary agent Benython Oldfield
of Zeitgeist Media Group has been appointed Festival Publicist for SWF
2013. Benython has worked in media and publishing for almost two decades.
He was a producer at ABC Radio, Channel 7, and Radio 2UE. At Zeitgeist he
has worked with The Commonwealth Writers' Prize and Shanghai
International Literary Festival, and has managed publicity campaigns for
The Australia-Asia Literary Prize, Aboriginal Studies Press, Affirm
Press, Allen & Unwin, NewSouth Books, Random House, University of
Queensland Press, University of Western Australia Publishing (UWAP),
Murdoch Books and Scribe. Benython started with the Festival on
February 4 and can be contacted at the SWF offices, on his mobile (0410

Emma Noble of Noblewords will join SWF 2013 in April as
Associate Publicist, collaborating with Benython and focusing on the
Festival's suburban, regional and community press campaigns. Emma has
nearly 15 years experience working in publishing in London and Sydney.
Over the years Emma has planned and executed publicity campaigns for some
of the world's best known authors, such as Ian Rankin, Antony Beevor,
Barry Humphries, AC Grayling and Kate Mosse. Emma can be contacted

Both publicists have had a long personal and professional
association with the SWF, and are welcome additions to the Festival team
for 2013.

Somewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, in a small isolated
village, Komona, a twelve-year-old girl, lived peacefully with her
parents until the day the rebels came. They pillaged the village,
captured Komona and forced her to commit an irreparable act. Now an
experienced warrior and soon to be mother, Komona relates to her unborn
child the story of her life since she has been at war. REBELLE is a
heartrending portrayal of a 12-year-old girl’s transition from a loving
daughter to a soldier in the rebel forces.
Nominated for the this year’s Academy Award for Best
Foreign Language Film.
